Universal Gyms – Meet A Sexy, Sleeker Home Gym

Universal gyms have come quite a long way since their inception into the world of fitness training. Long gone is the cube shaped frame, which was home to four popular stations. Today, they are built with some of the best materials and are crafted with the latest in technological advances. The four-station multi-purpose gym of the 80s has been replaced by its bigger, more sexy and sleeker cousin; the official Universal gym, leaving us only with a faint memory of what was.

I went to a really great high school. It was small and it didn’t have a lot of money; therefore, we often had to raise funds for whatever our school needed. In fact, I remember walking in the pouring rain, selling chocolate covered almonds for a football field that was built four years after I graduated! But that is beside the point.

There was eventually one fundraising purchase I did see come to fruition. When I was in grade nine (1988) our school purchased two universal multi-station gyms. Even though the purchase didn’t seem like anything major, it turned out to play a critical role in my early days as a volleyball and basketball player.

The universal units of the 80s were primitive and all looked roughly the same. They had four stations: the military press, curl and lat bar, leg press, and bench press. The way the gym was made, four people could exercise at each station at the same time. I can still envision my P.E. teacher using students to demonstrate how each universal station was to be used correctly. We would workout at a station for 1 minute, then she would blow her whistle and we’d continue to the next station. This would be done the entire class; it was a mini-circuit. Had you been able to peer into the window of our tiny weight room, you would have thought that our white and black multi-station machine was the greatest thing on earth.

Once I joined the basketball and volleyball teams, I really began to notice the importance of the universal home gyms. Regular training took place in our weight room as team members worked hard at getting stronger. Looking back on our training, it seemed pretty simplistic, but it worked. With only four major stations, I was able to gain considerable strength in both my arms and legs, helping me have a successful high school sport’s career.
