Basic Dumbell Exercises – A Beginner Guide

Basic dumbell exercises followed by some stretching movements will warm up your body and get you ready for a short aerobic workout. There are also many exercises you can do with dumbbells for strengthening different parts of the body. But always remember that it is very important to always warm up before doing any kind of exercise including dumbbell exercises.

If you are a beginner, a basic dumbell exercise you should know about is the wrist curl. These strengthen the forearm flexors and are a good start to any dumbbell workout. Hold the dumbbell in one hand while sitting on a bench. Your forearm rests on your leg with the wrist overhanging the knee. The dumbbell is lowered to the fingers and raised again to the palm by curling the fingers and the wrist.

Repeat the wrist curl several times before switching to the other hand. Always make sure to rest for a few minutes between each set of dumbell exercises.

Strengthen Those Wrists!

Another basic dumbbell workout is wrist extensions. These are similar to the wrist curls except you use the wrist to raise the dumbbell instead of the fingers. Both these workouts are good for strengthening the forearm flexors.

Squats strengthen the rectus femoris muscles. They are done by holding the dumbbells in an underhand grip, raising them to shoulder height and lowering the body until the thighs are parallel to the ground. Return to a standing position by straightening the legs. When doing squats keep your upper body straight.

There is a dumbell exercise that can be used to strengthen every muscle group of your body. Done correctly, they provide a safe workout while developing your endurance. Dumbbells allow you to train with natural movements. A beginner is likely to find dumbbell workouts satisfying and easy to do.
