Fitness Belts, other wise known as weight lifting belts, have two main purposes. First, they prevent back hyperextension during overhead lifts and, second, they reduce stress on the lower back while you are lifting in an upright position. A belt reduces low back stress by compressing the contents of the abdominal cavity. When a weight lifter or body builder wears a fitness belt it also causes them to be more aware of the position of his or her back. The primary reason for this is that the physical sensation of a belt against the skin serves as a mental cue, thus reminding the lifter to be aware of his or her back position and the muscles that they must use to maintain good posture. A fitness or weight lifting belt must be worn tightly to maximize its usefulness. However, it is important to note that research has shown that wearing a tight weightlifting belt during exercise can elevate blood pressure. Therefore, only tighten your belt when you are lifting a very heavy set, after this set is complete you should immediately loosen it to allow blood pressure to return to normal levels.
