July 29, 2004 Lifting Straps – Effective Solutions To Maximize Your Training
Lifting straps seem to cause a lot of confusion with novice weight lifters who are struggling to learn everything there is about the sport. Some individuals will say they are not necessary, while others will argue they are. Either way, the best strategy is for you to get informed about these weightlifting accessories and then make your own decision based on what you have learned. A lifting strap is made from strong pieces of fabric that are sewn or bolted together on one end and then the ‘tail’ end of the strap loops through and back to fit around your wrist. The ‘tail’ end of the fabric extends out several inches and is used to wrap around the bar you will be lifting, which then gets tucked tightly inside your fist. The general idea is that some of the weight load you are lifting is then shared with your wrists, allowing you to perhaps lift more weight while being less harsh on your hands. Lift Heavier Weights For Longer Periods Of TimeThese straps also serve to help the weight lifter lift heavier weights because they secure their grip. They also enable the weight lifter hold weights for a longer period of time because they help eliminate a weak power grip. The most common exercises whereby you can use a strap would be in pull-downs, rows, chins, deadlifts and shrugs. While there are solid arguments for the use of weightlifting straps, there are others in the industry who are fiercely against their use in training. Their argument against using the straps is that if a weight lifter becomes dependent on them during training they may lessen their gripping strength in the long run. Furthermore, straps are not permitted in competition, therefore, why practice with them? Proponents for their use believe that utilizing them during training will help you with exercises where your grip would otherwise prevent your from lifting a heavier weight set. Either way, there is a solid argument on either side. These lifting accessories are a very inexpensive piece of equipment that you can easily fit into your workout sessions. They definitely provide you with extra grip support when lifting heavier weights, and they do in fact help body builders lift heavier weight for longer periods of time. The best thing to do would be to balance your use of weight lifting wrist straps (i.e. maybe alternate workouts with and without them) so that you are getting the best of both worlds in the end.
