Weight Machine Plates – The Differences And The Dilemmas

If you’re the owner of a gym, whether it be a home gym or a commercial gym, you are bound to face the inevitable – the purchasing of new weight machine plates. While it may appear to be an easy task, there are many factors to keep in mind in order to avoid purchasing the wrong plates.

Not all weight plates are created equally; each weight machine plate series is made for a specific function and type of exercise. Cap Barbell is one example of a company that mass produces a variety of different weight plates to service various types of machines. Currently, the company carries four types of machine plates, but will also make weight plates according to detailed specifications as required. Most of their machine plates are made from solid cast iron and come in standard colors such as grey and black; however, they do manufacture steel machine plates as well.

One thing to ensure prior to purchasing you weight stack plates is whether or not you need selectorized, or your standard round plates. This may seem obvious to some, but it is much easier to locate round weight plates than it is to find the rectangular selector plates. Most commercial gyms use the selector plates, but there are machines that require you to manually change the weight plates. Therefore, you need to become familiar with the companies that sell whatever your specific needs are.

A Little Something Extra – The Add-On Horseshoe

The Add-On Horseshoe is a tiny weight that can be placed by a weight station and is made for selectorized weight machines. These unique miniature weights allow individuals to increase the amount they lift by smaller increments. Most of these weights are made of solid cast iron and are then coated with black rubber. They are ideal for those individuals who can’t afford to go up one whole weight increment, but want to add a little challenge to their workout.

Companies such as Ivanko sell these types of plates and they can be found at fitness depots and deal cutters. They are handy to have and make a great small gift.
