Glossary of Weight Lifting Equipment Terms

This glossary weight lifting and sports nutrition terms and definitions is organized alphabetically for your convenience. It is our hope that this will become an excellent reference headquarters for you.

Set – The designated number of continuous repetitions of a specific exercise. You should use anywhere from 6 to 12 sets per muscle group, using 2 to 4 different exercises at each workout. Because larger muscles have a greater capacity for work, they can endure more total sets than smaller muscle groups.

Shoulder Press – Shoulder Exercise – Sit at the edge of a flat workout bench. Grasp a barbell, have your palms turned away from you and rest the barbell on the back of you neck. Slowly press the barbell directly over you head, contracting your deltoids (should muscles) at the top of the move. Return to the starting position and repeat for your designated number of reps.

Shoulders -

Shredded - To get ripped, to have extremely low bodyfat with superior muscle separation. Also, sliced, cut, and cross-straited.

Sissy Squats – Lower Quadriceps Exercise – Stand upright, feet shoulder length apart and hold onto a bench frame or squat rack frame for support. Bend your knees, raise up on your toes, and slowly lower yourself toward the floor. Let your pelvis and knees go forward while your hed and shoulders tilt backward. Continue to let yourself down as low as possible until your buttocks practically touch your heels. Contract the thigh muscles and hold for a moment, then straighten your legs and come back up onto a standing position. Repeat for your designated number of reps.

Six Pack Abs -

Six Pack - Ab muscles so well developed that you can see the separate muscle under the skin where your stomach is. Other words include washboard.

Spot - To 'stand guard' while someone performs a set with heavy weights. A 'spotters' main duty is to prevent unjury in case that someone cannot finish is reps.

Squats – Quadriceps Exercise -

Staggered Sets -

Standing Cable Leg Curls – Hamstring-Glute Exercises - Attach an ankle cuff to a low cable pulley and secure it to your right ankle. Face the weight stack and grasp a sturdy portion of the machine’s frame for support. Keeping your thigh perpendicular to the ground, slowly bring your right foot back and up toward your butt. Contract your right hamstring. Slowly return to the starting position. Repeat with your left leg after finishing the desired reps on your right.

Straight Arm Pull downs – Back Exercise – Using an overhand grip, grasp a straight bar attached to a high pulley. Slightly bend your elbows and bring the bar to eye level. Keeping a forward tilt to your upper boy, slowly pull the bar down in a semicircle until it touches your upper thighs. Contract your lats. Reverse direction, returning the bar to the starting position.

Strict Form -

Superset – A set of exercises where one exercise is done immediately after another, with little or no rest, using opposing muscle groups. For example: chest and back or biceps and triceps.

Toe Presses – Calf Exercise – Sit in a leg press machine, your back firmly pressed into the padded seat. Place your toes a comfortable distance apart on the bottom of the footplate. Straighten your legs, unlock the carriage release bars, and drop your heels below your toes. Keep your knees stable and slowly press your toes as high up as you can. Contract your calves. Slowly return to the starting position. Repeat for your designated number of reps.

Trisets – In a triset three exercises are performed one after another, with little or no rest between sets, using three different muscle groups or three different variations of an exercise for the same muscle.
